CBD Gummies: DIY Recipe, Dosing Tips and More

In case you haven’t heard, cannabidiol, or CBD, is more popular than ever. Reported to help with all kinds of conditions, like nausea, anxiety, mood, relief from seizures, and a decrease in pain and inflammation, CBD is being included in more and more homes. From the medicine cabinet to the kitchen cupboards, CBD is being used as a kind of supplement to help maintain the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a physiological system tasked with getting the body to homeostasis, where everything is just right. Plus, hemp-derived CBD is non-intoxicating, so it will not get you high like cannabis’ other famous compound, THC.

What are CBD Gummies?

CBD, the shortened name for Cannibidiol, is an active ingredient of the hemp plant. CBD Gummies are simply gummy treats infused with CBD oil.

The Harvard Health blog states that CBD has promising research supporting its use in treating epilepsy, anxiety, insomnia, and some forms of chronic pain. However, more research is needed and there can be some side effects associated with ingesting CBD.

As with any supplement, it’s important that you talk to your doctor to make sure CBD is right for you. And, it’s also important that you do your own research to make sure that CBD is legal where you live.

How to Make CBD Gummies

Branching off of the popularity of cannabis-infused gummies, CBD gummies are also immensely popular. In fact, the term “CBD gummies” was one of the most popular Googled foods in 2018. As with any candy though, gummies are often filled with sugars and other artificial ingredients that are not so good for you. Luckily, CBD gummies are very easy to make at home and can be made to your liking, including how many milligrams of CBD, and you can decide the quality and purity of ingredients. Here’s how to make your very own CBD gummies.

Are there any health benefits of CBD gummies?

Manufacturers of CBD gummies claim CBD is effective at relieving anxiety, depression, pain, inflammation, and improving sleep. A CBD product (Epidiolex) has been FDA approved to treat epilepsy.

However, research into the effectiveness of CBD oil only tested pure CBD oil, not gummies. Even for pure CBD oil, there are very few well-conducted trials backing up its apparent health benefits, although research is expected to ramp up now that laws distinguish between hemp and marijuana.

There is no scientific evidence that gummies work, although anecdotally some people report a benefit and there is likely a strong placebo effect (the act of taking something to relieve your condition makes you feel better even if that product contains nothing).

Be aware that CBD is quite a bitter substance, and a lot of gummies contain large amounts of added sugar to disguise this taste.

Are CBD products legal?

Hemp-derived CBD products that contain less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are legal on a federal level; however, they may still be illegal in some states.

Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level; however, may be legal in some states. Check your state laws on CBD products.

Can CBD gummies make you high?

CBD gummies have no psychoactive properties, so they will not give you a high.

CBD is derived from hemp, which is almost devoid of THC. THC is the chemical in marijuana that gives you a high. By law, hemp must contain no more than 0.3 percent THC to be considered hemp, otherwise, growers are at risk of prosecution under federal law.

The main active ingredient in hemp is CBD, and CBD does not have any psychoactive properties. Instead, CBD has been credited with relieving anxiety, inflammation, insomnia, and pain, although “credited” does not mean proven.

What You’ll Need:

  • Glass Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Saucepan
  • Gummy Molds
  • CBD tincture (or preferred dosage of CBD isolate)
  • 1 Teaspoon Honey
  • 1 ½ Cups Fruit Juice
  • Food Coloring (optional)
  • ½ Cup Gelatin, with this caveat, especially for the vegetarians or vegans out there. Gelatin is made from animal collagen. So be sure to check out some meat-free options for your gummies

  1. Add gelatin to a medium glass bowl
  2. In a medium saucepan, add the juice and honey and combine over low heat until it starts to simmer, then remove from heat
  3. Add the warm liquid to the gelatin bowl and whisk quickly
  4. Allow to cool for about five minutes, then add CBD oil or CBD isolate to the liquid and whisk
  5. If using food coloring, this is when to add it, then whisk some more
  6. Pour the mixture into the molds and refrigerate until firm
  7. When firm, carefully remove them from the molds and store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place

A different way to add CBD is to put a few drops into each mold, add the gelatin mixture, then top with a few more drops, depending on how many milligrams of CBD you’d like in each gummy. As an option, CBD isolate can be used instead of a tincture, and stirred into the gelatin mix. And remember, the more milligrams you add, the more potent your gummies will be.

This is only one way to make CBD gummies, and with some creativity, practice, and trial and error, you can create your own recipes, designed by you for whatever ails you, whether that be insomnia, anxiety, pain, inflammation, or even if you just want to eat some gummy bears for no reason other than the fact that they just taste good.

How many gummies should I take?

It’s a very individual decision to determine how many gummies you should take. Please consult your healthcare provider regarding the best CBD dosage for you.

How much CBD is in each gummy?

Two mL or two droppers as recommended of the Medterra 3,000mg tincture includes 200mg of CBD. So, each serving of two gummies will provide about 13 mg or CBD. To make the gummies more potent, you can add up to 4 ml of CBD oil (or 4 droppers-full of the Medterra 3000 mg bottle).

What do CBD gummies taste like?

This recipe is sweet with a nice soft texture. These homemade CBD gummies taste a bit like candy gummy bears.

What is gelatin?

Gelatin is a powder that gives the gummies their texture. Gelatin is what is used to make Jello. Grass-fed gelatin is also a source of protein and collagen and has its own health benefits. Learn more about the benefits of collagen protein.

If the CBD gummy product that you are using actually contains CBD, the chances of you getting high are zero. You can take that to the bank. Why? CBD by definition does not contain THC.

Distillate works best for gummies. Whippin together gummies from scratch is an art, flick of the wrist and a game with the microwave.
